Bird watching is one of the easiest ways for children, who love birds, to explore their curiosity and expand their love of nature. There are a myriad of birds that live along side of us. They are able to provide us with wonderful opportunities to learn about them in the comfort of our backyard . Incorporating a child’s love of birds into every day play or a unique learning activity may be a little overwhelming for a parent. It can be easier than you think! You just need birds and wooden playhouses. Actually, one wooden playhouse is all you need for your child’s naturalist hut and the outside of the playhouse as the bird’s playground.
There are six tips below on how to attract birds to the outdoor play house and provide your child with a fantastic fun time learning about birds. Encouraging your child and providing an enriching learning experience all in the safety of your backyard will give you a sense of pride and relief.
Expand your child’s fascination with birds by implementing a few of these child-friendly tips.
1. Put together a bird house . There are inexpensive and easy-to-assemble bird house kits available at local hardware or discount stores that can be painted. . There are many different kinds of bird houses, so you may want to do some research ahead of time to figure out how big the bird house should be for the birds you want to attract . When hanging up the bird house, make sure the bird house is high enough off the ground that animals won’t drive the birds away.
2. Place one or more bird feeders around the playhouse to attract birds. The type of seeds that are placed in the bird feeder will dictate the types of birds that you will attract. A fun trip to the local discount store will prove to be exciting as your child will be able to view the wide selection of bird seed mixes and determine which birds they want to attract to the playhouse . You may want to have several different feeders for different seed types and thus different birds. Another reason to have multiple bird feeders is that smaller birds will have an alternative feeder to go to when the more aggressive birds, like Blue Jays, are around.
3. Birds need water for baths and to drink. If you want to have more birds visiting, consider having a bird bath. You can get bird baths at hardware or discount stores. Check out your local thrift store for bird baths, which can be an inexpensive alternative to those found in a discount store.
4. Gather bird watching supplies. Don’t forget to get your bird watching enthusiast binoculars and a field guide. In the field guide, avid bird watchers cross off or date the pictures of birds that visit the playhouse bird feeder . Imagine the fun your child will have at using their very own bird watching field guide book to mark off the birds they have seen at their playhouse. What’s more, they will become excited and want to tell you which birds they saw that day.
5. Help your youngster identify bird calls by going to your local library to check out DVD’s or CD’s on bird calls. Select 3-5 common birds that are visiting the playhouse bird feeder and find out their bird calls using the materials from the library. Have fun with this activity . See if your child can identify the 3-5 bird calls and then go to the playhouse to listen for these calls and verify visually if the birds were correctly identified.
6. Have an observation journal handy at all times for recording bird habitats, nesting spots or other activities. Video cameras can be used by your child as an alternative to drawing or recording information in their journal.
